The Courtyard of the two Temples: With more than twenty years of experience under its belt, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne has not strayed from its main vocation: to be the prestigious resource for one of the most prolific choreographers of the twentieth century. This dance company of 37 dancers affirms each day that classical technique expresses the hopes and the challenges of the era. In line with its international vocation, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, with more than 100 productions to its credit, continues to perform all over the world.

Gil Roman has been the artistic director since 2007, after a distinguished and uninterrupted thirty-year career as a dancer with the company. In December 2006, the late Maurice Béjart wrote about him saying: "I see only him to continue, preserve and possess my creations and ballets ... and no one else. This ballet belongs to him".

The FIB is pleased to present the Béjart Ballet Lausanne to pay a special tribute to Maurice Béjart, who had staged various productions of the Ballet du XXe siècle in our festival in 1963, 1966 and 1972.

MEDEA - PHAEDRA MONOLOGUES
FANNY ARDANT , INTERPRETATION
SONIA WIEDER-ATHERTON, CELLO

INTERPRETED BY FANNY ARDANT, THE MONOLOGUES OF MEDEA BY EURIPIDES AND PHAEDRA BY RACINE DIALOGUE WITH SONIA WIEDER-ATHERTON CELLO.

Temple of Bacchus:

The purpose of this evening is to create a link, thanks to the sound of the cello, between the words of these two great tragic figures whose lives were haunted by lies, but also by death as the release of heartache, two women whose destiny was guided by a devouring and tragic passion, Euripides's Medea and Racine's Phaedra.

Whether on stage or on the big screen, Fanny Ardant is the incandescent interpreter of women in love and whose, always equally cracked and mysterious. Truffaut used to say of her:..." I recognised in her the vitality, the enthusiasm, the humor, the intensity, but also the secret taste, a wild side, a slight of brutality, and above all, something vibrant."

By interpreting the monologues of Euripides's Medea and Racine's Phaedra, Fanny Ardant chose to let this brutality heard, but also to bring across the voice of a woman that carries love, revenge and death, in dialogue with the deep and tearing sound of Sonia Wieder-Atherton's cello.

LA TRAVIATA
A PRODUCTION BY FRANCE'S CHOREGIES D'ORANGE
PERFORMED AS A PART OF THE TWINNING BETWEEN THE TWO FESTIVALS

The Courtyard of the two Temples:

La Traviata is one of Guissepe Verdi's most famous and immensely popular operas. It means literally "the Woman who strayed", and is a study on the role and status of women, in a world dominated by men. It relates Alfredo Germont's love story with Violetta, a young and conflicted courtesan who, when faced with Alfredo's father's disapproval, decides to sacrifice her love. With La Traviata, Verdi manages to portray in a realistic way the range of human feelings by playing on the contrasts in order to emphasize the tragic elements; the opening begins with an adagio where death and sickness hover, and the ending is on a festive note with the carnival, which itself serves as a backdrop to the death of Violetta.

Leading interpreters:

Ermonela Jaho (Violetta) - Vittorio Grigolo (Alfredo Germont) - Marzio Giossi (Giorgio Germont). Orchestra of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie Musical Director: Paolo Arrivabeni Choir of the Opéra de Toulon Provence Méditerranée, Choir of Tours and Choir of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie. Ballet of the Opéra-théâtre d'Avignon et des pays de Vaucluse.
